Grigoriy Maliyev was born in Novorossiysk in 1978. He studied clarinet and piano at the Kerch School of Music. Later on, he pursued his clarinet studies at the Novorossiysk School of Music with A. Khrustalev. At the same time, he became a prize-winner (1994) and then winner (1996) at the Southern Russia Brass Competition. He graduated with distinction from the Saint Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in 2002, where he studied with Senior Lecturer Nikolai Kiryukhin, followed by a post-graduate course in the same conservatory. After that he has taught at the Secondary School of Music of the Conservatory since that time.
While studying at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, he combined his studies with work in the State Russian Concert Orchestra as a principal clarinetist, and then, between 2002 and 2004, in the Saint Petersburg Symphony Orchestra of the Children's Philharmonic, where he was concertmaster of the clarinet section. He has played a lot in various chamber ensembles. Between 2004 and 2005, he held the post of first clarinet in the Congress Orchestra.
In 2003, he became a semi-finalist in the XIII International Clarinet Competition Dos Hermanas, Spain. In 2004, he won first prize in the international competition "XXI Century Art" Kiev-Vorzel.
He took part in master classes with leading European teachers and performers such as H. D. Klaus, S. Meyer, R. Vele, J. Kotar, V. Madera, P. Beltramini and many others.
At present, he plays recitals on various venues in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Blagoveschensk, Arzamas and other Russian towns on a regularly basis. He also collaborates with Dmitri Vorontsov (French horn), Pavel Sokolov (oboe), pianists Oleg Weinstein, Elena Serova, Natalia Frolova, Maria Derevyagina, Elizaveta Ukrainskaya, the chamber orchestra "Soloists of Nizhny Novgorod" and many others.
In 2011, he recorded a CD of chamber music featuring clarinet pieces by J. Brahms and R. Schumann at Melodia studio. From 2010 to 2012, he participated in Save Tempo, a project performing baroque music. In 2013, he took part in a concert of the Mariinsky Clarinet Club. In 2013, he organised and staged an exhibition at the Specialised School of Music of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory as part of the promotion of interest in early instruments, which included lectures and performances of vintage clarinets.
Since 2012, he has regularly conducted master classes, lectures and refresher courses in Russia and abroad.
In 2014, he organised a woodwind ensemble called Gaudeamus, in which he combines the roles of organiser, artistic director and performer. The main idea of the ensemble is to perform both arrangements and original music for wind instruments from the 18th century. The ensemble's most acclaimed work is a joint project with the Russian Horn Orchestra conducted by Sergei Polyanichko. In an arrangement by Grigoriy Maliyev for woodwind quintet, Antonio Vivaldi's "The Seasons" was performed together with the Horn orchestra. The concerts were held to great acclaim at the Small Hall of the Philharmonic. The concerts were successfully performed at the small halls of the Shostakovich Philharmonic, the Grand Theatre in Warsaw and the Beethoven Hall of the Grand Theatre among others. At various periods the ensemble has included the best students and graduates of Grigoriy Maliyev's ensemble class.
Grigory Maliev has been an associate professor at the Department of Wood Wind Instruments at the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, where he teaches clarinet, wind ensemble, and various theoretical subjects such as teaching methodology, performance history, and historical performance styles. He is also a clarinet and ensemble teacher at the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory Secondary Specialized Music School and at the St. Petersburg Musical College named after N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov.
Grigory has won international competitions and has conducted master classes and training courses, delivered author lectures, and performed solo and with various ensembles in Russia and abroad, including Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Blagoveshchensk, Novorossiysk, Weimar, Warsaw, Nantes, and others.
Many of his students have become laureates of Russian and international competitions. Among the graduates who specialized in solo and ensemble performance, some are soloists in leading orchestras in St. Petersburg, while others have successful pedagogical and orchestral careers abroad, such as Switzerland and Germany.
For over a decade, Grigory has been a regular member of the jury for international and all-Russian competitions. Since 2022, he has been an artist of the German company F. Arthur Uebel.
In 2022, he won the competition for the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation's award for the best teachers of higher and secondary education institutions implementing higher education programs in the field of musical art for his achievements in pedagogical activities.
